Which phones does HellaLingo work on?

Any iPhone or iPad running iOS 26 or later, from the App Store, and Android phones running Android 10 or later, from our Android page.

Do I need an account?

No. Open the app and start. Your progress is saved on your phone.

Do I need the internet?

Mostly not. The lessons and dictionary are inside the app and work offline. On the iPhone, the alphabet and A1 recordings come with the app and the A2, B1, civics and dictionary recordings are downloads you choose in the app; after that they work offline too. The Android app has every recording inside. Speaking practice may need a connection for your phone’s speech recognition, and the optional AI features need one to reach your AI provider.

How do I turn on the AI tutor?

The easiest way is your ChatGPT plan: open Settings (the gear button) › AI tutor and tap Continue with ChatGPT. It needs ChatGPT Plus or Pro; Free and Go can’t be used by other apps.

Or create an API key with OpenAI or Anthropic, choose that provider in Settings › AI tutor, paste the key and allow the app to send your work. The key is stored only on your phone. Any charges for using it come from your provider.

Without AI you can still do everything else, including the reading and listening parts of the full exams. Writing and speaking need the AI to be marked.

I already know some Greek. Do I have to start at the beginning?

No. Use “Jump here” on a stage to take a short test and skip ahead, or turn on “Unlock all units” in Settings.

Will I lose my progress if I change phone?

Your progress is part of your phone’s backup. Restore your new iPhone from an iCloud or computer backup, or your new Android phone from your Google backup, and it comes with you. Add your AI key or sign in to ChatGPT again on the new phone.

How do I reset my progress?

In Settings, choose “Reset flashcards” or “Reset all progress”. Deleting the app also deletes your progress.

Speaking practice doesn’t hear me

Check that HellaLingo is allowed to use the microphone (and, on the iPhone, speech recognition): on the iPhone in Settings › Privacy & Security, on Android in Settings › Apps › HellaLingo › Permissions. Then speak a little slower than usual, close to the phone.
